If you’re sending money from Canada to family abroad, two names come up again and again: Wise and Remitly. Both beat the banks by a mile — but they charge you in completely different ways, and picking the wrong one for your situation can quietly cost you 2–3% on every transfer.

The 30-Second Verdict

Wise gives you the real mid-market exchange rate (the one you see on Google) plus one transparent fee, shown upfront. Remitly often shows a $0 or tiny fee but builds its profit into the exchange rate — the margin varies by corridor and speed. On most bank-to-bank transfers, Wise lands cheaper. When you need cash pickup, a mobile wallet like GCash, or delivery in minutes, Remitly is the one that can do it. Check both for your exact corridor before every send — the winner genuinely changes.

How Wise Works

Wise’s model is simple: you get the mid-market rate with zero markup, and you pay a separate fee that varies by currency — starting from 0.46%, according to Wise’s own pricing page. The fee has a small fixed part plus a percentage, and it gets cheaper in percentage terms as you send more. There are no subscriptions and no account fees; you only pay when you convert or send.

For Canadians specifically: Wise recently launched a no-monthly-fee chequing account in Canada with free Interac e-Transfers, so you can fund transfers from your Canadian bank account without paying Wise anything on that leg. Balances can qualify for CDIC protection up to $100,000 (held in trust at a CDIC member institution). Wise is registered with FINTRAC in Canada, and single transfers can go as high as 1.5 million CAD via wire or bill payment — so there’s effectively no ceiling for personal use.

How Remitly Works

Remitly splits its service into two speeds. Express (usually funded by debit or credit card) arrives in minutes — Remitly says 90% of Express transfers land within an hour — and carries a small stated fee, typically $1.99 to $3.99 on amounts under $1,000 in most corridors. Economy (funded by bank account or Interac e-Transfer) takes 3–5 business days and often carries a $0 fee — on the Canada-to-India corridor, Remitly’s own pricing page lists $1.99 below $500 CAD and $0 on $500 or more.

The catch is the exchange rate. Remitly doesn’t publish a fixed margin; it varies by corridor, speed, and market conditions. Independent comparisons put it at roughly 0.5% on Express transfers to popular corridors like India and the Philippines, and 2–3% on Economy transfers to less-liquid corridors. New customers get promotional first-transfer rates (recently around 68.11–68.42 INR per 1 CAD on the first $2,000 sent to India), which is genuinely a good deal — it just isn’t the everyday rate. Paying by credit card can add a surcharge of around 3%. Remitly covers 170+ countries and, unlike Wise, offers cash pickup, mobile-wallet delivery (including GCash and Maya in the Philippines), and home delivery on some corridors. It also guarantees delivery times — your fees are refunded if a transfer arrives late.

Fee Comparison: CAD Corridors

Exact rates move daily, so always check both before you send. Here’s the structure, verified October 2026:

Corridor / detail Wise Remitly
Exchange rate Mid-market, zero markup Marked up ~0.5–2.5% (varies by corridor and speed)
Canada → India fee Transparent fee from 0.46% + small fixed fee $1.99 under $500 CAD; $0 on $500+ (bank/Interac funded)
Canada → Philippines Mid-market + flat fee; best for bank deposits $0 fee common; margin ~1–2%; supports GCash/Maya wallets
Canada → UK / Europe Transparent percentage fee, no markup Small flat fee (e.g. $0.49–$0.99 observed on CAD→EUR); margin varies
Speed Seconds to same-day on popular routes; up to ~4 days Express: minutes; Economy: 3–5 business days
Max per transfer (Canada) Up to 1.5M CAD via wire/bill payment Up to 140,000 CAD (subject to verification)
Cash pickup No Yes, on supported corridors

To show this isn’t a rigged comparison: on Wise’s own comparison page, sending 2,000 CAD to Romania, Wise’s total cost was 12.49 CAD against Remitly’s 28.25 CAD — Wise won. But sending 2,000 CAD to Hong Kong dollars, Remitly’s total was 7.79 CAD against Wise’s 11.72 CAD — Remitly won. The corridor decides, not the brand.

Speed: When Minutes Matter

If someone needs money today, Remitly Express is the fastest option of the two — minutes to a few hours on most corridors, funded by card. Wise is no slouch (many transfers complete within hours or the same day), but it doesn’t promise minutes the way Express does. If you’re planning ahead, Remitly Economy’s 3–5 business days is fine — just remember the slower tier usually carries the wider exchange-rate margin, so “free” isn’t free.

Coverage and Payout Options

Remitly serves 170+ countries and is built for payout flexibility: bank deposit, cash pickup, mobile wallets, and home delivery depending on the corridor. Wise focuses on bank deposits (plus mobile wallets where available and Wise-to-Wise transfers), with a multi-currency account that lets you hold 40+ currencies. If your recipient only has a bank account, both work. If they need cash in hand or a GCash wallet top-up, Remitly is the answer.

Who Should Pick Which

Pick Wise if: you’re sending to a bank account, you send regularly and want the same transparent pricing every time, you’re sending larger amounts (the percentage fee shrinks with volume), or you want a multi-currency account for holding and spending abroad.

Pick Remitly if: your recipient needs cash pickup or a mobile wallet, you need money there in minutes, it’s your first transfer (the promo rate is genuinely good), or your corridor’s payout options matter more than squeezing the last 1%.

Try both here: check Wise’s rate for your corridor · check Remitly’s rate for your corridor. Run the same amount through both calculators and compare what your recipient actually receives — that’s the only number that matters.

3 Beginner Mistakes

1. Comparing fees instead of the total received. A “$0 fee” transfer with a 2% worse exchange rate costs you more than a $5 fee with the real rate. Always compare the final amount your recipient gets, not the fee line.

2. Paying by credit card without checking the surcharge. Card-funded transfers can add around 3% on top — wiping out any rate advantage. Bank account or Interac e-Transfer funding is almost always cheaper.

3. Assuming the first-transfer promo rate is the everyday rate. Remitly’s welcome rates are real savings on transfer one. From transfer two onward, the standard rate applies — recheck, and don’t be surprised when the numbers shift.
